Gusto’s “Dream Small” campaign makes the case small teams already believe

Gusto has launched its biggest creative campaign to date, and its message runs directly against the usual success story. Announced on October 29, 2026, the “Dream Small” campaign argues that for founders building something of their own, in their own way, with their name on the door and people they know by name on the payroll, small might be the bigger dream.

The campaign was developed in collaboration with Special US, directed by Nick Ball and shot by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. Its hero spot, “The New Big Dream,” follows a character named Tony as he opens a single dry-cleaning store — his childhood dream — against the advice of nearly everyone around him, including his father, who wanted him on the corporate ladder. Supporting films pair everyday small-business moments with the products behind them, and will continue rolling out through the rest of the year and into early 2027.

“Dream Small” runs across broadcast, online video, social, audio, influencer, and digital out-of-home beginning October 29, 2026, with broadcast placements including live sports coverage on CBS, FOX, The CW, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video through Thanksgiving week, and digital out-of-home in New York and downtown Chicago.

Why it matters for independent teams: this is not a campaign about scaling at all costs. It arrives, Gusto says, as new small-business applications hit an all-time record this year, and it cites U.S. Small Business Administration figures that small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and account for 43.5% of GDP. As Gusto chief creative officer Ximena Keirouz puts it, “there’s nothing small about small business.” For studios, agencies, and freelancers, that framing is useful client-side too: staying intentionally small, knowing clients by name, and choosing the work are ambitions in themselves, not a waiting room on the way to something bigger.
